In the GCE A-level Economics examination, there is now less emphasis on the testing of lower-order thinking skills of knowledge and comprehension. In order to do well in the examination, students must now display evidence of higher-order thinking skills (Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation) through the answers they write. To this end, regurgitating lecture notes will only weaken your ability to obtain high marks in the Economics examination paper. Students must be able to explain current economic events in terms of the relevant economic principles that they have learnt. They also have to integrate the different topics learnt to construct a coherent line of argument and reconcile conflicting ideas. In addition, they have to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of the various economic policies from their lecture notes. Finally, the ‘flow’ of their ideas must be logical, clear and concise. Examiners award marks for the ‘quality’ rather than the ‘quantity’ of responses given in the essays. Some of the model essays presented in this book were written by my former students under examination time constraint. These essays were selected to show you that it is indeed possible to write fairly lengthy (and substantial) essays within the limited time available in the paper. Students should also be aware that there are many ways of interpreting and answering an Economics essay question. The model essays on Macroeconomics in this book (and those on Microeconomics in its companion book) only serve as a guide to aid your revision.
