Joy of Serving: As a Testifier of His Grace, Memories from the Life of Margaret Bullitt Lutley 1st Edition: “Joy of Serving” describes the amazing life of Christian missionary Margaret Bullitt Lutley who was born in China, lived on four continents by the time she was nine, played lacrosse at the international level, studied in England, served as a headmistress in Chile, and was a teacher and head of the Spanish Department at West Nottingham Academy in the U.S.Upon retirement Margaret volunteered for Compassion International and went on to sponsor forty needy children in twenty-six different countries whom she now considers her “grandkids.”
She is a joyous, strong, independent, outgoing, grateful, loving, servant leader who has also faced many struggles including several bouts with breast cancer, loneliness, burnout, and living single. Margaret is unapologetically Christian and carries a deep, abiding faith in God which is apparent to all who have had the good fortune of knowing her.
“I got my first horseback ride out to a little church among the Araucanian (now called Mapuche) Indians. I went with Jean Porter on an emergency medical visit to a mom in a “ruca”—a thatched wee house with no windows—just a hole in the roof for the smoke. The mother had had a baby, but there was an additional problem; in the darkness Jean managed to detect another baby who couldn’t get out.”
The day before, I had promised I WAS NOT sponsoring any morechildren! I began playing with a freckled, red headed little guy who looked sad. Soon thepastor came over and shared with me that the boy needed lots of prayer; his father drankand beat him.
The father had also poured boiling water on his wife and threatened herwith a machete. Anyone can imagine what the Lord said to me the next day, “Yes, youneed to sponsor this boy.” Clodoaldo. “You never quite know what will happen when you pick up the phone. On Sunday,June 6, 1970, the call was, “Please, can you go to the Police Station and get Pastor Tony Valencia out of trouble?”
Margaret has had an amazing life. Successful headmistress, church planter, evangelist and great friend to our family. I am delighted to recommend this inspiring read.~ R. Rev. George Edward David Pytches, bishop of the Anglican Communion and former Bishop of Chile, Bolivia and Peru I highly recommend this unusual account of Margaret Lutley’s life, as it twists and turns across several continents and countries.
The evidence of God’s hand on her life is undeniable, and the detail of her adventures helps all to feel like we are actually walking with her. ~ Robert McKnight, Pastor of United Redeemed Church and Mayor of North East, MD “What a treasure this book is, for Margaret to share the incredible life God has given her in order to encourage others in their walk with Him.”~ Sheri Hudson, Estate Planning Regional Manager, Compassion International
